How Much Sound Do You Need? A Party Speaker Guide by Guest Count

By the AcidWaves team · 14 October 2026

"Which speaker do I need?" is the question we hear most. The honest answer depends on three things: how many guests you expect, whether the party is indoors or outdoors, and whether people will dance. Here's how we size a sound system, with the setups we'd recommend from our own stock.

Why the size of the system matters

A speaker that is too small has to run flat out to fill the room, and that's when it starts to distort and sound harsh. A system that is a little bigger than you need can play at the same volume while staying clean and relaxed. Bass is the hardest part: small speakers simply can't move enough air, which is why a subwoofer makes such a difference once people start dancing.

Rule of thumb by guest count

These are starting points for music people dance to. For background music or speeches, you can usually go one size smaller.

GuestsIndoors (living room, villa, hall)Outdoors (garden, terrace, deck)
Up to 30 One Bluetooth party speaker such as the JBL PartyBox 1000 or Soundboks 4 A LD Systems Maui 44 G2 column or two party speakers
30 to 80 Two 15-inch PA speakers plus one subwoofer The JBL EON715 + EON718S package or the Electro-Voice ETX package
80 to 150 Two 15-inch speakers with two subwoofers, e.g. the JBL EON or Electro-Voice ETX packages The JBL SRX835P + SRX828SP package
150 to 300 The JBL SRX835P + SRX828SP package Ask us: we'll size it for the venue

Outdoors needs more power

Indoors, walls and ceilings reflect sound back into the room and help the speakers. Outside, the sound keeps travelling and the bass fades fast, so a garden, a rooftop or the deck of a yacht needs noticeably more power than a room of the same size. If you're unsure, size up for outdoor events.

Speeches and microphones

If there will be speeches, toasts or a live band, you'll need microphones and a mixer. Keep the speakers in front of where people will speak, not behind them, to avoid feedback. Tell us in advance and we'll add wireless microphones to the setup.

Placement tips

  • Put the main speakers on stands, just above head height, so the sound travels over the crowd rather than into the first row.
  • Subwoofers go on the floor. Near a wall they sound bigger; away from it, tighter.
  • Point the speakers at the dance floor and away from the neighbours.
  • Keep cables out of walkways, especially around a pool.

A note on neighbours

A well-sized system sounds better at a sensible volume than an undersized one pushed to the limit. Check your building or community rules on noise and finishing times before the party, and let us know so we can tune the bass accordingly.

Quick checklist before you ask for a quote

  • Number of guests, and whether they'll dance
  • Indoors or outdoors, and roughly how big the space is
  • Speeches, a band or a DJ?
  • Power sockets near where the speakers will go
  • Access and setup time on the day

Send us those details on WhatsApp and we'll recommend the exact setup, or browse all speakers for rent.
